Review: Logan

Wolverine claws his way into our hearts with Logan.

Logan marks the end of an era for the Wolverine that we know.

Genre: Science fiction/Drama

Director: James Mangold

Cast: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook

Running time: 140 minutes

Rating: 16 L V

All of the Wolverine movies so far have been pretty dark and deep. But this is the darkest and deepest one yet.

Set in the year 2029, all the mutants have disappeared from the face of the Earth. If you’re expecting to see any of the X-men, you’re in for a disappointment.

It’s just Professor Xavier and Logan. And a young mutant girl who seemingly appears out of nowhere.

Wolverine takes on a role that we’ve never seen him play before: the role of a caregiver. He’s always just been a tough lone soldier with a heart of stone (or perhaps adamantium). But this time he’s an old, grey, sickly man who parents both the professor and the girl.

The dystopian world does make everything seem gloomy, and there’s not a single scene that allows for a laugh. Okay, maybe just one.

Fans of the Marvel character will love this movie because it’s gorier and more violent than any of the previous Wolverine films. You get to see to hot-headed hero slash limbs and arteries in all of his glory.

The movie is a bit long but one simply does not make a short Wolverine movie, especially when it’s his last. It’s also the end of the original X-Men series. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s that old X-Men movie that came out in 2000.

It’s no secret that Hugh Jackman is retiring from playing the character so this is his last appearance as Wolverine. Patrick Stewart has also called it quits so he’ll no longer be playing Professor X.

Seeing Logan in such a weary and ill condition does make you want to shed a tear or two. I mean, just remember what he looked like when he first stepped onto the scene and all the things he’s been through.

There’s no post-credits scene but the film does have a pre-credits opening scene. It’s a teaser trailer for Deadpool 2, which should cheer you up a little.

Logan is the ultimate farewell to the Wolverine we’ve come to know and love over the past 17 years. So take a box of tissues along with you when you watch the movie because you’re going to need it.
