7de Laan makes history again!

Deonay Balie is the newest addition to the 7de Laan family and she’s already made history as the show’s first transgender actress.

Deonay Balie made her first appearance on 7de Laan on Tuesday night. She plays a transgender character named Genevieve du Preez.

Genevieve will be on your screens for two weeks. She is a ‘‘larger-than-life’ 34-year-old who comes into town to take part in a beauty pageant.

The popular soapie was looking for a transgender person to play the role. Balie was chosen even though she doesn’t have any formal acting training.

The 27-year-old is actually a primary school teacher from Steinkopf, Northern Cape. 7de Laan contacted her on Facebook to audition for the role.

“I’m in my 3rd year education studies at Unisa and I’ve been teaching at this school while I’m studying. 7de Laan contacted me via Facebook to audition for the role and within an hour I got a call that I got the part.”

Fans of the show should prepare for emotional moments because Genevieve will be confronted about her sexuality.

Shooting the scenes for 7de Laan brought back a lot of feelings for Balie. She is able to relate to the character because of what she experienced during her own journey as a transgender woman.

“I’m able to use the personal disappointments and hurt I’ve experienced to portray Genevieve. I believe you should use moments of conflict to educate people.”

Balie believes there are no well-known transgender actresses in soapies and that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people need to tell their stories.

She considers it an achievement to be be one of the few, if not the only, transgender actresses on local television.

“I really think viewers will fall in love with Genevieve and her journey,” said Deonay Balie.
