Edward Enninful becomes Vogue’s first black male Editor

British Vogue marks a historical feat in the global fashion industry, by appointing Edward Enninful as its new Editor-in-Chief. The appointment makes Enninful the first man of color to edit an international women’s magazine.

The former model and stylist who originates from Ghana, is currently the Creative and Fashion Director for W Magazine. “The stylist has a history of making beautiful, timely – and sometimes controversial – images. He has a reputation as someone who shakes up mainstream fashion titles, and makes them chime with the interests of younger readers,” wrote British Vogue on their website.

Enninful began his career in fashion at the age of 16 after he was scouted as a model. Amazingly at 18, he had  already been appointed style editor at i-D Magazine. After this stint, he went on to work as a Contributing Editor at Italian and American Vogue, before joining W Magazine in 2011.

Enninful was born in Ghana in 1972 before moving to London with his family at a young age. His initial fashion influence was his mother, who worked as a seamstress, and inspired him with the vividly patterned colors and fabrics she used in her creations.

Despite Enninful being highly regarded in the fashion industry, he wasn’t an initial front-runner for the position. The London Evening Standard labelled  him a “surprise outsider” amid speculation over who would be replacing current Editor, Alexandra Shulman.

Condé Nast, publisher of Vogue, called Enninful, “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood, and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist.” Chairman Jonathan Newhouse cited his work at Italian Vogue as having reached “landmark status in recent cultural history.”

Enninful will take over the Editor position from current Editor, Alexandra Shulman this August. Shulman congratulated Enninful on Instagram, writing, “I hope you love Vogue as much as I have.”
