The funeral of Karabo Mokoena commenced this morning at the Diepkloof Community Hall. Mokoena was laid to rest at the Westpark Cemetery in Randburg.

Mourners reportedly gathered in their thousands in an emotional send-off to Karabo Mokoena. Mokoena’s death has perhaps inadvertently made her the face of femicide – the killing of a woman or girl, in particular by a man and on account of her gender – in South Africa.

Mokoena is alleged to have been murdered by her boyfriend, murder-accused Sandile Mantsoe. It has been reported that Mantsoe allegedly confessed to Karabo’s uncle, Tshepo Mokoena, that he had killed and subsequently burnt Karabo’s body. Karabo’s body was found discarded in a Lyndhurst rubbish dump after her family had reported missing for two weeks.

The funeral saw everyone from politicians to celebrities and sympathisers mourning the tragic loss of her young life. The releasing of Doves was a touching tribute that triggered fresh tears for the family as Karabo’s Coffin was slowly lowered into the ground.

May Karabo’s soul and the souls of countless other women who’ve faced the same heart-wrenching fate rest in peace.
